This statement dates from 2009, when the Östersundom area (about 24 times the size of Malmi Airport) had just been involuntarily annexed to Helsinki from neighboring Sipoo municipality – with the Cabinet’s blessing and explicitly on the grounds of providing Helsinki with residential building reserve for its future needs. Prominent politicians and city representatives hinted at the time that with Östersundom, there would be no need to take Malmi Airport into residential use.
